Senior Graphics Engineer – Data Visualization

Research & Development

San Francisco Bay Area, Remote

July 2, 2025

Our client is building a next-generation visual analytics engine — one that renders hundreds of millions of fast-changing business records into crisp, interactive 2D graphics right in the browser, at 60fps.

We are looking for a Senior Graphics Engineer with deep expertise at the intersection of real-time graphics and data science. You’ll architect and implement a real-time rendering pipeline — from advanced spatial algorithms like Voronoi and clustering to performant, browser-based visualizations that help go-to-market teams make data-driven decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement the end-to-end data processing and rendering pipeline, balancing performance, visualization quality, compatibility with the existing ETL infrastructure, compute cost, engineering complexity, and overall user experience;
  • Develop algorithms and methods to accelerate processing, enhance visual quality, and enable novel interaction patterns. Stay current with academic research and apply state-of-the-art techniques to solve challenging technical problems;
  • Build research prototypes, validating their feasibility empirically, and productionizing them upon success;
  • Document findings and development progress, including what works, what doesn’t, and the reasoning behind technical decisions;
  • Build core components of the visualization pipeline, including unit tests and well-documented, developer-friendly APIs to support seamless integration by other engineers;
  • Make key decisions on integrating existing libraries or technologies vs building custom versions;
  • Communicate trade-offs, limitations, and implications of current and proposed implementations clearly and proactively with the team.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience building real-time graphics or data visualization software;
  • Deep knowledge of 2D geometry processing and spatial data structures, familiarity with GIS;
  • Demonstrated success turning complex data structures involving techniques like Voronoi into interactive, production-grade visuals;
  • Experience with clustering and dimensionality reduction algorithms;
  • Hands-on experience with graphics APIs like OpenGL, WebGL, WebGPU, or Vulkan;
  • Performance-oriented programming languages such as C++ or Rust;
  • Familiarity with full-stack web development, ideally with React;
  • Strong software engineering craft: design, code reviews, testing, profiling;
  • Able to communicate smoothly with product, design, engineering, and data-science teams;
  • Familiarity with distributed query engines (DuckDB, ClickHouse) and columnar formats (Parquet) used to serve large datasets;
  • Familiarity with workflow management platforms like Airflow or Prefect;
  • Self-discipline and high organizational skills to consistently deliver quality work, with little supervision;
  • Professional-level written and spoken English.

Bonus points for

  • Experience with mapping;
  • A research background; PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field;
  • Experience with LLMs;
  • Experience with distributed computing;
  • An ability to go outside your comfort zone in terms of acquiring new, both technical and interpersonal skills, depending on the constantly evolving team and company needs.

We offer excellent benefits, including but not limited to

  • Fully distributed team with flexible, remote-first work culture;
  • Minimum 5 weeks of paid time off annually;
  • Retirement planning support (401k);
  • Generous parental and family leave;
  • Comprehensive health insurance plans;
  • New equipment and home office stipend;
  • Support for personal and professional development outside of work;
  • Annual team offsite;
  • A diverse, collaborative, and genuinely fun team.
